A threat sent to the emergency helpline

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav received a death threat, sent to the WhatsApp number of the Dial-112 helpline at the Radio Headquarters in Bhaddra, Bhopal. The message named the Chief Minister and threatened to kill him, and contained other abusive statements about him.

The message arrived on the helpline on Wednesday, 23 September, at about 11:30 am. Staff at the helpline took a screenshot of the message, reported it to senior officials immediately, and preserved the record. Because of the seriousness of the threat, a complaint was made to the Bhopal police from the Radio Headquarters.

The sender edited and deleted the message

After sending it, the person edited the message twice and finally deleted it. Staff had already taken a screenshot before it was removed, so the record of the threatening message was available to the police along with the complaint. The changes made to the message, and the original text, are under investigation.

FIR on Thursday, arrest in Mumbai on Friday

Once the complaint reached the Crime Branch, a case was registered against the person who sent the threat on Thursday. The police then began tracing the mobile number from which the WhatsApp message had been sent.

At the early stage of the investigation, two questions were in front of the police: who sent the message, and what was the intention behind sending it. A mobile number alone was not considered enough to reach a final conclusion about the sender's role or motive, so the police proceeded on the technical facts attached to the number.

During the technical tracing, the location of the mobile number was found to be in Mumbai. A Bhopal police team reached Mumbai on Friday and arrested the accused. According to the published report, the police were bringing him to Bhopal for questioning.

What is still unknown

Two important details have not been disclosed. The name of the accused and the reason for the threat are not stated in the report, and the investigation is ongoing.

It is also important to be clear on what has not been established. As of the available information, no plan or preparation for an attack has been confirmed. The case on the record is a threatening WhatsApp message and the police registration that followed it. Anything beyond that goes further than the reporting supports.

After the arrest, the police will try to establish what the accused intended by sending the message, and they will also examine the claims made in it. Staff on duty captured the content before it was withdrawn, and the police then held onto that along with other technical evidence. Without that first step, the tracing of the number would have had no context to attach to, and the case that was registered on Thursday would have had no stated basis.
