Mahakaleshwar Temple Footfall and Ujjain's Simhastha 2028 Build-Out: What Pilgrims Should Know

Plan for a busier Mahakaleshwar than the one you remember
Daily darshan crowds used to run to 40,000 or 50,000. They now reach 1.5 to 2 lakh. Swarajya reports, citing the temple management committee, that 5.5 crore devotees were counted between 1 January and 15 December 2025, and that the shrine took in a record ₹142 crore in 2025-26. That is the baseline to plan against.
What the last peak week actually looked like
Between 25 and 31 December 2025 the temple committee recorded more than 7 lakh darshan in seven days. Cars arriving in Ujjain roughly doubled, from about 6,000 on an ordinary day to 12,000, and most hotels were full. Entry was then moved to the Triveni Museum and Char Dham side, leaving a walk of roughly 2.5 km for darshan. VIP darshan was suspended and online Bhasma Aarti bookings stayed closed until 5 January. Patrika News reported that Ujjain police, its cyber team and a Gurugram-based IT company changed Google Maps routing to divert congested roads from the temple approach.
What is being built before Simhastha 2028
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav told a Ujjain workshop on 27 June 2026 that around 40 crore devotees are expected, roughly eight times the five crore planned for in 2016. On his list: 22 new bridges over the Shipra, new ghats, wider road, rail and air connectivity, and a digital command centre. He also called for better facilities at hotels and roadside eateries within 100 km of Ujjain. Reported by Swarajya, the programme runs to about ₹13,851 crore across 128 projects.
How the route into Ujjain is changing
Reported by Swarajya: the largest road project is a 98.73 km greenfield four-lane corridor from Ujjain to Jaora at ₹5,017 crore, linking the city to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway by December 2027; two more link Ujjain to Indore, at ₹2,935 crore and ₹1,692 crore. Ujjain is also set to get an airport — an MoU with the Airports Authority of India, signed 1 November 2025, to develop the existing Datana airstrip. Until a terminal opens, Indore is still the nearest operational airport.
The Shipra: 29 km of new ghats, and a diversion tunnel
A 29.15 km ghat project is being built at ₹778 crore, reviewed on 20 June 2026 by Chief Minister Yadav and Union Housing Minister Manohar Lal Khattar at Triveni Ghat. Alongside it, the ₹919.94 crore Kanh Diversion Closed Duct runs 30.15 km — 18.15 km of cut-and-cover duct and a 12 km tunnel — carrying polluted Kanh water from a barrage at Jamalpura and releasing it below the Gambhir dam, so it never reaches the ghats. All four tunnel shafts are done and 8.15 km of tunnel is excavated: a cleaner river, and a far longer ghat frontage to walk.
Inside the old city, and what is still unconfirmed
Roads around the old city and the Mahakal area are being widened, and a 629-metre underpass at Hari Phatak is meant to give pilgrims an alternative route to Mahakal Lok. Reported by Swarajya: more than ten five-star hotels are coming up or planned. No Simhastha 2028 darshan booking protocol or e-cart route map has been published. December 2025 was a rehearsal, not a schedule.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Could darshan be rerouted as it was in late December? A: Yes. Entry moved to Triveni Museum and Char Dham with a 2.5 km walk, VIP darshan was suspended, and online Bhasma Aarti bookings stayed closed until 5 January. There is no standing rule; the call is made at short notice.
Q: Can I trust Google Maps on a crowded day? A: Not always. During that week police and an IT company reweighted Google Maps routing to steer traffic away from the temple, so a route that looked clear in the morning can change within hours.
Q: Is there going to be an airport at Ujjain? A: The state signed an MoU with the Airports Authority of India on 1 November 2025 to develop the existing Datana airstrip. Until a terminal opens, plan on Indore.
Q: Does any of this change a normal visit today? A: No. Darshan timings, rituals and current arrangements are unchanged — everything above is either a past rehearsal or preparation for 2028.
