Mahakal E-Carts Down 2 Days, Back Partly: VIPs Ride, Elderly Walk

E-carts missing when elderly pilgrims need them most
Battery-operated e-cart service at Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar Temple stayed disrupted for two days and had only partly resumed by Tuesday, 6 October 2026 — and pilgrims report that most of the carts actually running are reserved for VIP and VVIP devotees. Elderly and disabled visitors, the very people the service exists for, were left to walk long distances in heat and humidity. If you are visiting with senior family members this week, do not count on an e-cart being available at the gate.
What went wrong
According to the temple committee, a technical fault during charging knocked several carts out of service two days ago. The committee holds around 42 donated e-carts, run in three shifts of 12 carts each — but several were already non-functional and parked unattended for a long time before this fault took more off the road. Service from Sunday through the corridor gates simply did not run.
Where e-carts normally run
The service connects three pilgrim entry points: the Mahakal Mahalok (Triveni museum) gate, Neelkanth gate and Harsiddhi gate. It is meant precisely for the elderly, the disabled and those who cannot walk the corridor's long stretches. Tuesday's partial restart has not restored normal availability for ordinary devotees, as per ground reports.
The VIP-first complaint — and the MP's anger
The resentment has been building: Ujjain's MP had earlier objected that e-cart facility reaches VIP devotees instead of common pilgrims, and took the matter up with the temple administrator. Tuesday's scenes — running carts ferrying VIPs while seniors walked — have sharpened that criticism. Deputy Administrator Simmi Yadav said the charging fault is being repaired and operations resumed from Tuesday.
What pilgrims should do this week
Treat e-carts as a bonus, not a plan: schedule darshan in cooler morning hours, keep the group together, carry water and medicines, and use the shortest gate route for seniors (ask at the gate which corridor entry is currently shortest). Private wheelchairs and cab-assisted darshan planning remain the reliable fallback — Shrimm Tours & Travels arranges senior-friendly darshan logistics; see our businesses.

Q: Who are e-carts meant for? A: Elderly, disabled and mobility-impaired devotees moving between the Mahalok, Neelkanth and Harsiddhi gates.
Q: Why were they stopped? A: The committee cites a technical fault during charging; several carts were already long-broken before that.
