Uma-Sanjhi Mahotsav Begins at Mahakal Temple: 7-Day Festival Until 12 October

A seven-day festival begins at the Mahakal temple
The traditional Uma-Sanjhi Mahotsav 2026 has begun at Ujjain's Mahakaleshwar Temple and will run from 6 to 12 October 2026. Organised by the Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee during Shraddha Paksha, the festival opened on Monday with Ghat Sthapana and Vasant Puja rituals. On the traditional calendar it runs from Ashwin Krishna Ekadashi to Ashwin Shukla Dwitiya. If you are in Ujjain this week, the temple complex and Mahakal Mahalok will carry extra programming every single day — plan darshan around the evening events rather than against them.
What happened on the opening day
The opening rituals were led by Additional Collector Pratham Kaushik, conducted under the guidance of priest Ghanshyam Sharma, with Assistant Administrator Himanshu Carpenter, priests, purohits and temple staff present. Kaushik told the media the annual festival is being celebrated with special Uma Mata worship alongside cultural activities. The temple was decorated with fragrant flowers brought from across India and abroad, and special lighting, for the festival week.
Daily rangoli, masks and 21-Brahmin Vasant Puja
Following established custom, temple priests will draw fresh artistic designs every day on the ancient Sanjhi stone rangoli canvas, alongside decorative mask tableaux of Lord Mahakaleshwar. Each evening after the aarti, 21 Brahmins will perform Vasant Puja. Through the week the temple will also host painting, shloka recitation and rangoli competitions.
Cultural programmes at Mahakal Mahalok
Evenings bring the Mahakal Mahalok cultural stage to life: a folk dance troupe led by Sanjay Mahajan of Khargone and folk singing by Mamta Mishra of Narmadapuram are on the opening programme, with more folk artists through the week. Daily Hari Kirtan runs from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm, led by Yogesh Purandare with Dholi Bua Maharaj of Gwalior and associates.
The finale on 12 October
The festival culminates on 12 October with the grand Uma Mata Sawari and the immersion of the jware at Ram Ghat. Expect the largest crowds — and the longest darshan queues — on the closing day, especially around the procession route and the ghats in the evening.
How to plan your visit this week
Daytime darshan remains the calmer option; evenings belong to the festival crowds. The corridor gates used for cultural entry see the heaviest footfall after 5 pm. Elderly pilgrims should prefer morning slots and carry water — October afternoons in Ujjain are still warm.
